Journalist Laura Meckler is an education reporter for the Washington Post. She also grew up in Shaker Heights. She’s combined those things in her new book, Dream Town: Shaker Heights and the Quest for Racial Equity in which she looks at how the Shaker Heights school system approach integration as racial diversity grew, and the successes and failures of its initiatives to maintain a welcoming, racially balanced community. While today the eastern suburb of Cleveland is known both for academic excellence and integration, Meckler explores the hard work, debates and difficulties that went into achieving that.
Meckler returns home to northeast Ohio to speak at the City Club; WKYC’s Russ Mitchell moderates the conversation. She’ll sign book after the forum; they’ll be available for purchase at the City Club courtesy of Mac’s Backs on Coventry.
If you can’t make it to the City Club at its new Playhouse Square location, it will be livestreamed starting at noon. If you have questions, you can text 330-541-5794.
