Wed 3/4-Sun 3/8
Every year during the first weekend in March, the Beachland Ballroom & Tavern celebrates the fact that it survived another year. And in each of those years, the club’s reputation, locally and nationally, has only grown as a place to hear intriguing music, old and new, in a variety of genres, in a setting that has a warm, casual neighborhood vibe.
This year, the club turns 15, with new life crackling outside on the street around it — galleries, art-making spots, shops, restaurants and bars. That was the dream of Beachland co-owner Cindy Barber when she opened the club: to serve as a catalyst for the revival of the Waterloo/North Collinwood neighborhood. And it’s starting to happen.
The anniversary weekend — this year stretching to five days — opens small with Jennifer Westwood & the Handsome Devils, GS Harper and Kate Kooser in the tavern. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, there will be events in both the Ballroom and the Tavern, plus a vinyl record show during the day Saturday. (Friday’s Echosmith show in the Ballroom is sold out, but there’s plenty else to choose from). On Sunday things wind down in a low key again, with the Mastersons, the Womacks and Aaron Lee Tasjan in the Tavern.
