The @AkronSymphony Pays Tribute to Rivers at EJThomasHall

Sat 3/14 @ 8PM

The Akron Symphony’s latest concert program is unified by an intriguing concept: pieces that pay tributes to rivers. There’s the Danube, of course, memorialized by Austrian composer Johann Strauss in “On the Beautiful Blue Danube.” There’s Czech composer Bedfich Smetana’s “The Moldau,” after the German name for the Vltava River, which flows through Prague.

Moving across the ocean and ahead a century, the symphony will play Duke Ellington’s The River Suite, written to accompany a ballet by Alvin Ailey which premiered in 1970. And finally, moving back to 19th century Europe, the program concludes with Robert Schumann’s Symphony N. 3 in E flat major (“Rhenish”).

Music director Christopher Wilkins conducts the program at E.J. Thomas Hall.

Tickets are $25-$55.
