It’s kind of redundant for the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra to dub a performance “Swing’s the Thing,” since this ensemble is always swinging.
But for this performance they’re bringing local musical theater maven Bill Rudman to host a program focused a time when movies and musicals were swinging, that ’30s and ’40s era when they were producing tunes we still love and sing today.
As is typical for a Rudman program, it’s multimedia. So there will be film clips of jazz groups performing in movie musicals, along with enlightening narrative about who, what, when and where.
The program will feature the orchestra’s associate artistic director and lead trombone player Paul Ferguson and Rudman’s regular collaborator, pianist Joe Hunter. The one-night-only concert takes place at PlayhouseSquare’s Ohio Theatre.
Tickets are $30-$50.
