‘The Mighty Scarabs’ Makes a Comeback @KaramuHouseInc

Tue 3/3 – Thu 3/5 @ 5:30 – 7pm

If you missed the Karamu production of The Mighty Scarabs — the story of my Alma mater, the venerated East Tech High School — when it first debuted in 2012, you’re in luck since a “New & Improved Production” is about to take center stage, opening in early March.  The talented Cornell Calhoun III (East Tech Class of ‘67), a Karamu regular who has appeared in many productions over the years, wrote the play.

The Alumni Association will host Meet & Greet receptions (appetizers will be served) to benefit its scholarship fund at preview performances of the play on March 3rd, 4th and 5th from 5:30 to 7 pm. There will be opportunities to purchase “Scarab Wear” during the receptions. The production, which features the spirit of the winning ways of the powerhouse State Championship basketball teams of the late 50s and early 60s, will run until March 29th.

Since 2006, the East Tech Alumni Association has raised more than $95,000 in scholarships for student/scholars at the school, and the organization is asking that anyone unable to attend the performances to consider making a tax-deductible donation to the East Tech Scholarship Fund by sending a check to ETAA, P.O. Box 5067, Cleveland, Ohio 44101.

On a personal note, when I was a student at East Tech (Class of ’61 … no, not 1861!) I was one of many student/fans who never missed a game during that fantastic 1959 to 1962 run. Ah, those were the days! And, since the school has been around for over 100 years, there should be plenty of alumni to keep Karamu filled for the run of the production. Hope to see you there!
