Obviously a chair in the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra is a pretty prestigious slot for a young musician. And the quality of the middle school and high school players, drawn from 11 counties across northeastern Ohio, is very high. Many are undoubtedly conservatory-bound and the coaching they receive from Cleveland Orchestra members is surely a big boost.
Three times a year, the group gets to play on “the big stage” — Severance Hall — in concerts that are not for parents only, but a treat for any classical music lover.
Their next concert will feature a pair of short early 20th-century symphonic tone poems written to capture the movement of the sea — Maurice Ravel’s Une Barque sur l’ocean and Claude Debussy’s La mer.
But those are just appetizers. They’ll then be joined by the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus for a performance of Gabriel Faure’s stunning Requiem in D minor. Soprano Marian Vogel and baritone Nikola Budimir will be the featured soloists.
Tickets are $15-$20.
