Few pieces of music are more popular than the nine symphonies by Ludwig von Beethoven. Cleveland Orchestra audiences, will be treated to two of them on a single program this week: Symphony No. 1 and Symphony No. 2.
They’ll be accompanied on the program by Symphonic Metamorphosis by 20th-century composer Paul Hindemith. Original written in the early ’40s for a ballet that didn’t pan out, it later inspired the legendary George Balanchine to set his ballet Metamorphosis to it.
Audiences on Thursday and Saturday evenings will hear both symphonies. The Friday evening performance will feature only Symphony No. 2 and Metamorphosis. But it will also include a pre-concert performance at 6pm in the Reinberger Chamber Hall by the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble and Performance and Improvisation Ensembles, with special guest Tim Ries, and two after-concert performances: Sammy De Leon y su Orquesta featuring saxophonist Tim Ries in the Grand Foyer, and Brazilian guitarist Moises Borges. Concertgoers are invited to come early and stay late for drinks, food and more music.
Veteran Polish conductor Marek Janowski will be on the podium.
Tickets are $29-$149.
