Thu 10/9 @ 7:30PM
Son of legendary jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, now 88, singer/guitarist John Pizzarelli has applied his own considerable talents to early and mid 20th century romantic pop ballads and his own originals in that style. He’s tackled Duke Ellington standards, as well as tunes associated with balladeers like Frank Sinatra and Nat “King” Cole sang.
But he’s also done his own take on the Beatles, and on his most recent album, 2012’s Double Exposure, he covers Joni Mitchell, Seals & Crofts, Tom Waits, Neil Young, Steely Dan, Elvis Costello and even the Allman Brothers (their instrumental “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”). But he keeps hinting at his jazz roots here and there by injecting themes from Ellington collaborator Billy Strayhorn, Lee Morgan, and Joe Henderson.
He’s the kind of performer who gives you an excuse to dress up and pretend you’re at a hot cabaret or supper club in the ’50s. Conveniently, he’s playing the Music Box Supper Club, a place where you can sit down, enjoy a few cocktails and even have dinner while you soak in the music. Brazilian guitarist Luca Munduca opens.
Tickets are $48 in advance, $48 day of show. Doors open at 6 for dinner.
