Canton-born Macy Gray’s debut album On How Life Is rocked the ragged-voiced soul singer into instant stardom, wowing fans and critics alike with her offbeat phrasing and close-to-the-surface emotionalism. Her single “I Try” blazed up the charts and propelled the album to multiplatinum status. She snagged three Grammy nominations and won one. But she never recaptured that success. She became known for erratic performances and unpredictable behavior, and was eventually diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

She’s soldiered on, releasing five more albums since she took a four-year hiatus in 2003, including The Way released earlier this year. She cemented her intriguing oddball status with 2012’s Covered on which she covered tunes by artists like My Chemical Romance, Arcade Fire, Colbie Caillet, and Metallica, not your usual choices for a black R&B singer.

So you should probably go to her show at the Music Box Supper Club without expectations, open to whatever energy flows through her on that night.

She’s actually performing two shows; the original scheduled one on Tuesday and an added one on Wednesday.

Tickets are $27.50.
