Apollo’s Fire, Cleveland’s baroque orchestra, has typically done series of summer concerts that are a little less formal than its regular season, with its Countryside concerts.
This year, their summer concerts will take place at several different venues, starting with a series of four concerts at Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, followed by one at Avon Lake United Church of Christ (July 26) and another the Bath Church UCC (August 13),
The programs at each location with be slightly different, but all will revolve around Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, with Apollo’s Fire artistic director/harpsichordist Jeannette Sorrell and assistant artistic director/violinist Alan Choo presenting the piece “as the revolutionary acts of musical storytelling that Vivaldi intended.”
“If you thought you knew the Four Seasons, be prepared for surprises!” they tell us. “From the bird calls and storms to a barking dog, drunken peasants, an exhilarating fox hunt, and more… the musicians join Vivaldi’s 18th-century peasants as they revel in the changing of the seasons.”
The concerts at Holden, which feature soprano Andrea Walker, will also include 17-century songs about nature (appropriately, considering the setting) by Henry Purcell and Thomas Morley.
