One doesn’t expect bluegrass music to come out of Chicago — it’s about as far from its roots as you can get. But that’s where the Henhouse Prowlers have been making their original bluegrass music for nearly two decades now. (Not a lot of henhouses in Chicago!) But they’ve also traveled extensively as ambassadors for their musical style with their own nonprofit called, literally, Bluegrass Ambassadors. And they’ve taken it to more than two dozen countries around the world as part of the U.S. State Department program that sends musicians to countries around the world. The cultural exchange goes both ways: they’ve incorporated songs from Asia and African into their repertoire.
This weekend, they’ll be coming to a place closer to us: Riverdog Barn in Lorain County, a rustic venue ideally suited for such down-home music, bringing tunes from their dozen albums, including last year’s Lead and Iron. And you can bring your own picnic basket and cooler and enjoy a pre-show party outdoors. Get tickets here.
