There’s nothing more American than the Cleveland Plus region, never more obvious than during an election season when we become inundated with politicians and their advertising. Such is the life of the largest region in the largest swing state. And there’s nothing more American than focusing on sustainability, which Cool Cleveland highlights with our new GREEN tags on news & events of interest to those taking the long view of life on earth. The Museum of Natural History likewise looks forward, and Mansfield looks back at the life of Stephanie Tubbs Jones. Read about the blogger meetup at Americano, the acquisition of a locally-based blogger portal by Technorati and a preview of the Americana Music Fest. You can’t get more American than that. –Thomas Mulready

Much More than Dinosaur Skeletons
CMNH Looks To Bright Future Says Outgoing Director Latimer

No disrespect to the dinosaurs, but there is a lot more going on at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History nowadays than just the exhibits of full-sized replica skeletons from 65 million years ago. For the past eight years, Bruce Latimer, Ph.D., has served as the executive director successfully leading the organization into the 21st century by re-examining its mission and creating an exciting new strategic plan. He first came to the museum 32 years ago as a graduate student in physical anthropology studying the evolution of human locomotion.

With board members and staff committed to the new direction and future design of the museum, Dr. Latimer, 54 years old, recently said it was a good time to announce his retirement so he can devote his energy to research, writing, and teaching. “We have selected the Denver, Colorado, architecture firm, Fentress Architects, that will design plans for a major museum expansion and renovation project,” he explained. An exhibit design firm has already been chosen to create new, interactive educational displays. After museum board approval of the plans in October, a major capital campaign will begin…

The two online entities connected at the Blogworld Expo last year, with a business connection getting serious over the last few months. Olsen gave an exclusive interview to Cool Cleveland Managing Editor Peter Chakerian late yesterday, offering some insight on this late-breaking story…

Clayton Smith
Director of Field Operations, DOTS
Cleveland Plus

Clayton Smith has recently moved to the Cleveland Plus region, but he takes nothing for granted. After having lived in places like Dallas, Baltimore, Denver and Tennessee, he appreciates his easy 30 minute commute, versus the 75 minute commute he was used to. Now he and his wife live near Downtown in Ohio City, and enjoy going out to Playhouse Square, the 2nd largest theatre district outside of New York City. and what’s a night out on the town without a fine dining experience, something the Smiths enjoy in a number of neighborhoods: Tremont, Ohio City and Lakewood. Their favorite? Lolita, run by the reigning Iron Chef, Michael Symon. They also enjoy the Metroparks, and mountain biking on the Towpath Trail that runs along the canal from Cleveland down to Southern Ohio. Above everything, Clayton appreciates the friendly people in the Cleveland Plus region, and the way he was made to feel right at home. http://www.ClevelandPlusLiving.com

Stephanie Tubbs Jones: No Better Champion
Plus, Thoughts on “Talking Control” and The Best Wrong Choice Ever

The last time I had a chance to speak with Stephanie Tubbs Jones at any length occurred quite by accident. A meeting had been scheduled at an Eastside church to discuss universal healthcare, and Stephanie was the convener and principal speaker. I had another appointment in the area that finished up early, so I got to the church a half-hour before the scheduled start time.

Going in through the rear door of the church I was walking past the open door of the kitchen and there was my Congresswoman, all alone, busily preparing food for the meeting. No kidding, here was arguably the most powerful woman in the region, one who had a pretty large staff that was always at the ready to do her bidding, and here she was, elbow deep in preparing food for the faithful that would soon fill the church.

She flashed that high-wattage smile of hers (some people with such large personas suck all of the air out of a room when they enter, Stephanie, on the other hand, breathed life into a room when she entered) and invited me into the kitchen and immediately put me to work assisting her…

Great blogger meetup at Americano last Wednesday. We did a session like thinkrs & drinkrs with everyone tossing an anonymous question into a hat, then discussion each one. Had a chat with Chef V and finally got the right blog address for him. Check out his latest post: Got these beautiful fresh Californian figs, came up with nice daily special… love combination goat cheese or blue cheese with nice ripe fruit. Going to serving tonight and the next couple days, Fresh fig, babe watercress and goat cheese fritters appetizer, dressed with my beet and red wine vinaigrette,(the one I’m using for salmon) should be a killer combo sweet, warm, crispy …

I guess I will be the first to post my opinion on last night’s Blogger Meetup. I enjoyed the wonderful conversation and meeting new people. We had some great topics on sustainability, how will Cleveland be different in 2009, and the ethical standards of posting blogs. Great venue and the sunset was spectacular as well. comment by Toni Chanakas

It was a good time. The company was simpatico, the weather was perfect, and you were right about the espresso rubbed hanger steak: it was excellent. Chef V has a very nice space and an interesting menu. I got a Sidecar from the bar, a classic drink often glossed over in this age of fake martinis, and it was yummy. I swear it had a little Pernod in it. comment by Jeff Hershberger

Despite the fact that I don’t live in or blog about Cleveland, last night I attended the Cleveland Webloggers August meetup… No one seemed to mind that I live in Willoughby, or that my blog doesn’t typically wander into the realms of Cleveland politics, society, art or industry. And since I wasn’t shunned or ostracized, I thought I’d write a quick blurb about the meetup… comment by Kris Johnson

Americana Music Festival 2008

It’s been dubbed a loose subset of American roots music, but “Americana” really is as classic a form of heartfelt American music as there is today. It honors 20th century musical genres originating here (including folk, country, roots rock, bluegrass and even rockabilly) and thrives in Nashville, Austin, Kansas City, and in the rural pockets and plains across the country. It’s also wildly successful right here in Cleveland, which, given the subject matter of the songwriting, should come as little surprise. Who better than “hearts-on-the-sleeve” musicians from Cleveland to perform this great, emotion-drenched jangle? That’s what we thought.

Founded by Clint Holley – producer, singer-songwriter and guitarist for Hayshaker Jones – this third incarnation of the “Americanafest” features a spectacular, four-day lineup at local venues. Bobby Lanphier & The Bitter Disappointments offer a full-band performance at Prosperity Social Club in Tremont this Thu 8/28 at 6:30PM, but that’s only the beginning. On Fri 8/29 at 8PM, there will be two live gigs – one at the Sachsenheim on Denison Ave. with Rambler 454, and a Songwriter Showcase at the Hi-Fi in Lakewood. The festival wraps Sun 8/31 with headliner Deke Dickerson and the Ecco-Fonics, at the Beachland Ballroom and Tavern in the Waterloo arts district in Collinwood. There will be a barbecue tailgate to nosh on and the Beachland’s two stages will offer twelve local and regional bands during the day.

What better way to wind down the summer, right? That’s what we thought, too. Details for all of the performers, locations and performance times can be found on the Americana Music Fest 2008 MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/americanafest.
