The Musical Theater Project Looks at the Impact of the Musical “Hair”

Sun 4/30 @ 7:30PM

It’s hard to believe now, but the musical Hair, billed as “The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical,” was considered convention-shattering for musical theater. It debuted off-Broadway in 1967 before heading to Broadway the net year, with its message about hippie culture, drug use, sexual freedom and the anti-Vietnam war peace movement. And there was nudity! Gasp! The tunes “Good Morning, Starshine,” “Easy to Be Hard,” “Hair” and “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In” became top five hits for an unlikely batch of pop acts, respectively, Oliver, Three Dog Night, the Cowsills and the Fifth Dimension.

The Musical Theatre Project will explore this history when it presents “Countercultures! The Impact of Hair” at Notre Dame College’s Regina Auditorium (Note location change from Fairmount Temple, which is closed due to a fire.) TMTP crew will tell the story through live performances, commentary and video clips.
