The Jazz Unit was sort of a house band for the old Bop Stop, performing every Monday night at the club’s various locations, including the current one which was donated to the Music Settlement nearly three years ago. They were known for performing mostly original material written by the band’s members, recorded on their 1998 album Choices.
The 13-piece ensemble featured many of the well-known jazz players around town including numerous members of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, retired head of the CSU jazz program Howie Smith, director of jazz studies at the University of Akron Jack Schantz, and vibes player Ron Busch who owned the Bop Stop.
The group is reuniting for a one-night-only performance at the Bop Stop, their first since the Music Settlement took it over. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 day of show.
