Chuck E. Costa and Mira Stanley formed The Sea The Sea in 2011, taking their name from a chant, described in Xenophon’s Anabasis, of soldiers catching sight of their coastal home after a protracted inland battle.
The duo from upstate New York came together after upheaval in their own lives and began to make nuanced, harmony-rich music. Their 2014 debut album Love We Are We Love accented their vocals with electric and acoustic guitars, piano, banjo and subtle percussion but their song emerge as a thoughtful conversation between the two. They followed it up with an EP In the Altogether in 2016, and now with their new full-length, From the Light, they’ve expanded their lineup and continuing to develop the possibilities inherent in their lavish folk-pop.
They’ll be back at Oberlin’s Riverdog Gallery and Retreat, performing in the barn, augmented by vocalist Cara May Gorman and drummer/percussionist Steve Struss. It’s $15 at the door, $5 for students. Gates open at 6pm. As always you are welcome to bring a cooler, picnic basket or snacks.
