Trumpeter Terence Blanchard Performs Wayne Shorter Tribute at Tri-C

Sat 10/15 @ 8PM

Trumpet player Terence Blanchard was forged in the musical hothouse of New Orleans, where he grew up with the Marsalis brothers, the city’s most musical family. He was just 20 when he joined Art Blakely’s Jazz Messengers in 1982 as Wynton Marsalis’ replacement, at Marsalis’ suggestion. He left to launch a solo career in 1990; among other things, he’s scored numerous Spike Lee films as well as dozens of others.

During his lengthy career his path of course crossed with that of the now 89-year-old jazz sax player/composer Wayne Shorter, one of the genre’s major figures, including when he served as artistic director of UCLA’s Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz while Shorter was a board member.

Last year, he released an album called Absence, featuring his E-Collective electric ensemble and Turtle Island Quartet, paying tribute to Shorter as a composer. The 12 tracks include his interpretations of some of Shorter’s material as well as pieces inspired by him.

Blanchard, E-Collective and the Turtle Island Quartet will be performing the material at the Tri-C Metro Campus Auditorium. General admission is $25; students will valid ID are $10; Tri-C students are free. Go here for more info and tickets.
