Cleveland’s New Ghosts productions is partnering with the Bop Stop to bring in Norwegian quintet Friends & Neighbors, a pretty good sign that this is going to be a musically adventurous evening. The young band is known for its melodic free jazz, harkening back to the generation that produced such revered musicians as Pharaoh Sanders, Archie Sheep and sax player Ornette Coleman, one of the towering giants of the genre who passed away last year. Its 2011 album No Beat Policy works to keep his legacy alive.
According to their bio, “Friends & Neighbors have created an authentic and acoustic atmosphere that refers back to the political roots of free jazz.” That’s intriguing coming from a group of young Norwegians because the genre was frequently aggressively Afro-centric.
Tickets are $10.
