Nature Center at Shaker Lakes Annual Plant Sale Moves Online

Through Friday 4/17

Update: due to increased demand, this sale has sold out!

Once April and May roll around, many organizations, churches, community centers and other groups hold plant sales so that growers can stock up to get their gardens started. It’s often a fundraiser for these groups.

One such organization, which offers vegetables, herbs, perennial and annual flowers and more, is that annual plant sale sponsored by the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes, which raises money for the nonprofit organization to maintain its surroundings and offer educational programs.

Normally, it’s a time for nature lovers and gardeners to gather and shop, while socializing with neighbors and getting gardening tips from experts. But because of the pandemic, the 38th annual sale, original scheduled for Sat 5/9, is going online. And this year, in addition to the usual favorites, it will offer an enhanced variety of native plants that help strengthen the regional ecosystem by supporting butterflies, birds and insects native to the area.

“Many in our local communities stray from native gardening simply because they believe a native garden is not as easy or beautiful as the typical popularized garden,” says Nature Center of Shaker Lakes president/CEO Kay Carlson in the event’s press release. “The truth is, native gardening is beautiful and includes the added benefits of providing habitats and food sources for dwindling pollinator populations such as bees, wasps, caterpillars, beetles, flies, moths, butterflies and birds. Not only this, but native trees and plants help protect and restore healthy soil and water resources.”

Plants can be ordered now through Fri 4/17, and will be available for delivery in a 20-mile radius of the center for a small fee.
