Local folksinger Alex Bevan, who released his first album 45 years ago, has achieved rare longevity in his career. He’s both an engaging, entertaining performer and a versatile songwriter, whose work ranges from humorous songs — such as his most famous, 1974’s “Skinny Little Boy (From Cleveland, Ohio)” to introspective reflections on love and the beauty of nature. He’s steadily released new material over the years, amassing a catalog of several dozen albums.
Bevan waxed nostalgic on his latest Boomer! A Utopian Memoir, released back in January. Co-produced with keyboard player David J. Young, who also co-wrote a couple of the tunes, it’s a 14-song story-album that follows two Cleveland musician friends in their 60s as they plan and execute a 40-year reunion show by their old band. It name checks people, places and things that music lovers of that generation will recall with nostalgia.
Now, assuming none of them throws out their back helping their grandchildren assemble their new Christmas presents, the self-dubbed “Boomer Gang” is riding again Beachland Tavern for a post-Christmas show. Bevan and Young will be joined by bassist Bill Watson, a veteran of many area Americana/alt country bands such as Hillbilly Idol and Rachel Brown & the Beatnik Cowboys, and drummer Tom Dobeck, who has played with Michael Stanley for more than 40 years.
It’s a primarily seated show because a lot of the fans are as old as the musicians! Admission is $12.
