You may have heard talk about invasive plants, plants brought here from other countries and continents that end up out-competing native plants that are an essential part of the local ecosystem, providing food and shelter for native animals, insects etc. But maybe you don’t really grasp how the pieces of this ecosystem interact.

A good way to learn — and a fun way to get outdoors and do something beneficial for the environment instead of sitting home and seething that politicians in Columbus took bribes to slash green energy projects and prop up a coal plant in Indiana at our expense — is to join a team at Cuyahoga Valley National Park for an invasive plant removal drop-in.

Both first-time volunteers and veterans, as well as kids 10 and up, are welcome, although those 10-15 must have adult supervision. Volunteers will be using hand tools such as saws and loppers to remove plants. They’ll provide work gloves and eye protection, as well as a water cooler. Bring a water bottle, and you may also bring your own personal safety equipment if you prefer.

Advance registration is required. Go here.
