The spirit of one of Shakespeare’s most magical plays, The Tempest, will fill Severance Hall this weekend, when the Cleveland Orchestra performs an evening of pieces inspired by that work.
It’s an uncommon event when an orchestra debuts a work, conducted by the composer. But that will happen twice this week when British composer/conductor Thomas Adès conducts co-commissioned The Tempest Symphony in its U.S. premiere; it’s also Adès’ Cleveland Orchestra conducting debut.
All of the other pieces on the program are Cleveland Orchestra premieres, including Adès’ Märchentänze and three pieces by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius: Prelude and Suite No 1 from The Tempest and Humoresques.
The program features Pekka Kuusisto as violinist soloist.
