Reflection

Often art helps point the way. Especially local work by local artists. They can tell you what it means to be alive right here and right now. So check out Reflections of Cleveland at E11even2 at 78th Street Studios, for which kayaks were acquired to get a unique view of our homeland. Or witness the scholarship winners of the Cleveland Cello Society in performance at BOP STOP. Catch a glimpse of the future of rock and roll at the High School Rock Off at the Rock Hall.
Reflect on CPT’s Entry Point, a 3-day mini-fest of works in progress. Drink wine and make a sweater purse at Sip N Sew. Maybe do a fundraiser this week: Brite Winter Warmer to raise money for their Feb fest, Bayarts’s Beer, Brats and Bingo “funraiser,” the Launchhouse Bootstrap Bash for aspiring entrepreneurs. Cleveland’s finest will shine in the reflection. –Thomas Mulready

Photographer Christina Sadowski is one of three co-owners of the fun, funky gallery E11even2 at 78th Street Studios, a space devoted to affordable, often pop culture-based art. Visitors will also be familiar with her own work, often presenting unusual looks at Cleveland.
Those will be the focus of her solo show Reflections of Cleveland. She snagged some kayaks and set out on the Cuyahoga River to look at the city from different viewpoints. She talks to CoolCleveland about her latest body of work which goes on view Fri 1/19.

College students are experts at staying up for 36 hours straight, so the Case Western Reserve annual Science Fiction Marathon should be no challenge for them. Post-collegiate sci-fi fans can bring sleeping bags to Strosacker Auditorium and catch a quick nap.
Now in its 43rd (!) year, the event features a roster of ten classic and obscure films, some of which aren’t really science fiction but appeal to fans. “It’s just a massive amount of people in a small space enjoying the nerdy stuff you love,” says marathon co-director Jonathan Schaeffer. Fri 1/19-Sat 1/20.

It’s been more than 40 years since a group of dancing siblings formed the contemporary dance troupe Grupo Corpo in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Since then, they’ve traveled the world, bringing their distinctive take on contemporary dance to places like Cleveland.
This weekend they’ll be doing two performances of both and new works at PlayhouseSquare. Our dance writers, Elsa Johnson and Victor Lucas, provide some tantalizing details in an interview with company choreographer Rodrigo Pederneiras. Sat 1/20-Sun 1/21.
Want a cultured, well-rounded young child? The Music Settlement’s Early Childhood is the place! “We liked that the school was engrossed in all of the cultural aspects of Cleveland… and we loved the well-rounded education that was being offered here,” said Katie.
“I think The Music Settlement has an extraordinary reputation in Cleveland,” Tom said. Katie adds, “You look at different schools & you can see the obvious difference even just stepping in the hall for a couple minutes.”
