As Akron musician/music scene catalyst Ryan Humbert puts together his 14th Annual Holiday Hangout, taking place at the Goodyear Theatre, he’s coasting on a lot of good news for his own band, the Shootouts. The alt-country band with its traditional country music influences is prepping to release its third album, Stampede, produced by Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel, on February 24 — on the same day it’s been tapped to play at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
The excitement should turbocharge the group’s set at the Holiday Hangout where they, like all the other groups, will be giving a holiday spin to their music. They’ll be joined for the evening by a batch of prominent musicians and ands from the Akron area: Marc Lee Shannon, former guitarist for Michael Stanley’s Resonators; colorful eclectic global music performer Angie Haze; the six-piece Labra Brothers, whose rocking music is influenced by blues, country and Latin music; roots rock quartet the Ohio Weather Band; Canton rockers Hey Monea; and indie-pop singer/songwriter Shelby Olive. Each will do a 20-minute set including both their own original material and their takes on holiday classics.
Formerly called the Holiday Extravaganza, the concert started at the Akron Civic Theatre in 2009 and has taken place at an Akron venue every year since with the exception of 2020 when it was livestreamed. The format of the show has varied over the years, sometimes just featuring Humbert and his band in an intimate setting, other years bringing in his musician friends from the greater Akron area.
