When the celebrant at Norman Tischler’s memorial service at The Temple-Tifereth Israel February 3 asked how many there had played or recorded with Norm, more than half the hands in the packed sanctuary went up.
Few musicians have touched as many people in the local music scene as the warm, friendly, funny and talented sax player (who also played clarinet, flute and trombone) who virtually never turned down an opportunity to play, starting from virtually the first day he set foot in Cleveland in early 1969 as a VISTA volunteer from the East Coast. He soon joined up with eclectic American roots music ensemble Tiny Alice, and it went on from there, until just weeks before his death on January 21 from cancer at the age of 72. His memorial service was like a big reunion.
Now the many musicians he played with and friends he made over the years will gather for a more informal celebration of Norm’s life at the Music Box Supper Club. Among the performers are Tiny Alice, bluesman Travis Haddix, Motown group Moss Stanley & Nitebridge, blues rockers Colin Dussault, swing/jump blues/50s-style rockers Blue Lunch, klezmer group Yiddish Cup, InCahoots and next-gen sax player Tony Koussa are only some of the performers, demonstrating the wide range of musical styles Norm’s career touched on.
Admission is $10; proceeds will go toward Norm’s medical and funeral expenses.
