The Cleveland art community suffered a huge loss when sculptor John Jackson and photographer Masumi Hayashi were murdered in 2006 in their work/live building on the west side by a mentally ill neighbor.
Hayashi’s work has been widely seen; there’s even a book of her work available. But Jackson’s work has been preserved by institutions such as Artists Archives of the Western Reserve, which received a group of his work from collector Achala Wali in 2019.
That work is part of its current show, Against Gravity: Remembering John Jackson, offering viewer a look at the full range of his work, including assemblage sculpture, paintings, drawings and mixed-media works, some not seen since his death, influenced by his post-industrial surroundings.
This weekend Artists Archives is hosting a talk and community gathering to honor Jackson’s member. John Jackson’s sister, Helen Zakin, will talk about his life and his artistic practice, while other members of Cleveland’s visual arts community, including artists, Liz Maugans, Douglas Max Utter, Susan Squires and Artist Archives executive director Mindy Tousley, will talk about their memories of him and his place in Cleveland’s art scene. Anyone else who has memories to share will be invited to do so at this casual event.
The work will be on view through March 11.
