There must have been something in the water in what’s now the Czech Republic backing in the second half of the 19th century. That time period produced the culture’s best known classical composer Antonín Dvořák, as well as Bedřich Smetana and Leoš Janáček (who worked into the 20th century, dying in 1928).
The Cleveland Orchestra pays tribute to these composers in its program at Blossom Music Center this weekend. It opens with Smetana’s “Sárka” No. 3 from Má Vlast and Janáček’s Taras Bulba before concluding with Dvořák’s 1885 Symphony No. 7 in D minor. On the podium will be Michael Francis who is British, not Czech, and is based in Florida where he leads The Florida Orchestra in the Tampa/St. Pete region.
Tickets start at $26.
