Northeast Ohio actor, playwright and musician John Dayo-Aliya is interested in contemporary black lives and how they reconcile love, faith, community and family with the rampant racism they face in society. According to his bio, “He creates work that provokes audiences to call out to their higher humanity in order to face social and cultural issues with intelligence, clarity, and empathy.”
His hour-long theater piece …Or Does It Explode? is based on stories provided by Akron men ages 16-35. It features vignettes that draw on poetry, dance and various to look at the experience of being young, Black and male in modern America.
Last year, Dayo-Aliya adapted the production, which features actors Austin Sasser, De Andre Hairston-Karim & Dar’Jon Bentley, for Zoom; Cleveland Public Theatre aired it in November. Now it’s back to kick off CPT’s spring season, with three more performances. Tickets are $1, with a suggested donation of $1-$99.
