Two local theater groups — Playwrights Local and Powerful Long Ladder ensemble — have joined forces to present a new domestic drama by up-and-coming playwright Ernesta Jefferson called Thiz Girlz Lyfe.
Directed by Terrence Spivey, the play centers around an exotic dancer Nasheema Morgan, in Cleveland, whose live is much less serene than it appears on the surface, with domestic abuse causing her to make bad decisions that put her daughter at risk.
“We’re proud to present this gritty, authentic piece by Ernesta Jefferson, an up-and-coming writer we have a lot of faith in,” said Playwrights Local’s artistic director David Todd in the prodution’s press release. “There were a couple of smaller presentations of Thiz Girlz Lyfe before, but Ernesta has reworked the script in our Play Lab program this year. We think this will be an extremely compelling show, one enhanced by our partner, the Powerful Long Ladder Ensemble. This is a real story about life in Northeast Ohio — the type of thing we at Playwrights Local want to bring to local audiences.”
Lorraina Worthern stars in the role of Nasheema, with a cast that includes Samone Cummings, Sean Dubois Day, Arien Hodges, Rochelle Jones, Michael L. May, Irma R. McQueen and Nyrie Stallworth.
Performances take place Fridays and Saturdays @ 7:30pm and Sundays @ 2:30pm, through Sat 5./18 at the Creative Space on Waterloo. Tickets are $18, $15 for seniors and $12 for students.
