Misbegotten

What are we doing to ourselves? In a season when we have given thanks, offered gifts, promised resolutions and are about to profess our love, some things around here are amiss.

Mad Men and Angry Women epitomize the tectonic shift in power relationships, as CoolCleveland’s CareerTOOLBOX columnist Alex Sukhoy analyzes her view on the zeitgeist. Your voice is needed as the Ohio legislature has been busy this week undermining our democracy with a misbegotten redistricting measure. The Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless and MOCA are teaming up to fight the good fight with “Hear for the Homeless” at the Beachland. And the decade-long Sustainable Cleveland 2019 project kicks off its final year with a major public event zeroing in on vital neighborhoods. This we can do.

Not all is anguish and anxiety. Bring the family to the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes, sit by the fire, drink some cocoa and enjoy stories and songs about nature and the environment. Sample pierogies at Coit Road Farmers Market. Watch our video on pothole rockers Burnin Loins as they release their debut album. Be there for the 2018 Tri-C JazzFest announcement party at Nighttown. Join the Winter Seed Swap in Ohio City. The good news is, supporting each other in this amazing region, we can bring about hope. –Thomas Mulready

As Sustainable Cleveland 2019 moves closer to its target date, the ten-year project, with a different focus each year, takes a look at Vital Neighborhoods in 2018. It kicks off with a public event at City Hall Fri 1/26 before spending the year zeroing in on effective local community initiatives.

The Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (NEOCH) has been fighting the good fight against homelessness in Cleveland for three decades. MOCA Cleveland currently has an exhibit in which musicians incorporate sound snippets provided by homeless people.

The two organizations have joined together for a benefit called Hear for the Homeless at the Beachland Ballroom at which an all-star Cleveland roster, headed by Wesley Bright and Carlos Jones, will play to raise money and educate people about the issue and its potential solutions. Thu 1/25.

This week the Ohio legislature is busy undermining democracy. In response to a congressional district map drawn so outrageously that a state that votes close to 50/50 has 12 Republicans in Congress and four Democrats, the League of Women Voters has been collecting signatures to put on the November ballot a redistricting bill that puts citizens first.

Apparently afraid of their success, the Republicans in the legislature are trying to rush their own redistricting measure to the May ballot. Theirs actually makes the situation worse. Let them know you are watching – and contact the League and help them collect signatures.

SPONSORED: Conversations in Sport A move to revolutionize the financial model of college athletics is the focus of a FREE Baldwin Wallace University Conversations in Sport panel discussion on Thu 1/25. BW’s School of Health, Physical Education and Sport Sciences presents the exploration of amateurism and college athletics, featuring founders of the new Historical Basketball League which aims to compensate college players. It’s not the Mad Men era anymore, thank god, when no one questioned the right of men to see women as sex objects and inferiors in the work place. But the recent outpouring of revelations about sexual harassment and the pushback against it have left many people groping for a way forward.

Columnist Alex Sukhoy explores the implications of this heightened awareness and hopes that it might lead to climate in which people advance based on their knowledge, skills and work ethic, and not their gender.
