Wade Oval Wednesday, a popular free outdoor concert series that’s been running for more than a decade (with a pandemic break), are underway at University Circle.
They kicked off June 14 with the smooth jazz of Hubb’s Groove who suddenly seem to be on every summer outdoor concert series this year. Perhaps organizers think we need to chill and relax more after all the pandemic anxiety and no band is better equipped to help that process. WOW runs through August 16 with every week offering food from food trucks and stands: usually things such as pizza, hot dogs, BBQ, ice cream and popcorn are available.
But there’s no bigger night that the annual appearance of Carlos Jones and the P.L.U.S. Band who always hold down the last slot pre-July 4. Expect a big crowd so come early if you want to get a good spot on the lawn. (It’s a big lawn so there’ll always be some place for you to spread your blanket or open your folding chair.) The band’s warm, welcoming reggae vibes mesh perfectly with that summer feeling. Expect a slightly different sound as the band’s longtime guitarist Darren “Cholly O” Evans and bass player Ghani Harris have moved on amicably to other projects, but the vibe remain and you never know who will show up for this gig.
