The 60-year-old British chamber orchestra the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields is a big favorite of Akron’s Tuesday Musical Association, which has booked it for many concerts at its home in E.J. Thomas Hall.
The group was founded in 1959 by Sir Neville Marriner, who led it throughout most of its existence. in 2011, however, American violinist Joshua Bell became the first person other than Marriner to hold the title of music director. Bell, who like many classical musicians was a child prodigy, had the good fortune to be born in Bloomington, Indiana, home of one of the world’s finest music schools where he was able to study under world-class teachers. Now 52, he’s had a prolific performing and recording career.
Bell will be performing with the conductor-less orchestra, playing Niccolo Paginini’s violin showpiece, his Violin Concerto No. 1. The orchestra will also play Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4.
