Sweet Moses Soda Fountain & Treat Shop does a pretty good job of bringing back the ’40s and ’50s with its retro décor and old-fashioned treats.
But it’s amping up that vibe when it plays host to the Everley Sisters, a trio of women who sing in the boogie-woogie, three-part-harmony style of the legendary Andrews Sisters. The Andrews Sisters, whose career stretched from the late 30s through the early 50s, recorded some of the biggest hits of the WW II and postwar era: “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree,” “Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar” “Shoo Shoo Baby,” “Rum and Coca Coloa” and a whole slew of hits with Bing Crosby including “Jingle Bells” and the #1 hit “Don’t Fence Me In.”
“When I saw the Everley Sisters sitting at the soda fountain one afternoon, I felt like I walked on to the set of a 1940s movie,” says Sweet Moses founder Jeff Moreau. “Having them sing here is sure to add a fun, new dimension to the Sweet Moses experience.”
The three women from western Pennsylvania — sisters Rachael and Christina Brown and friend Deborah Bates — started the group in 2014 to pay tribute to that bygone era. They wear clothing, hairstyles and makeup from the ’40s and use a vintage microphone.
“The first time we walked into Sweet Moses, the three of us looked at each other and said, ‘We have to sing here!’” says Rachael Brown. “We’re so excited to get to sing these wonderful songs from the era, in a setting that is inspired by the era. It’s a match made in 1940s heaven.”
They’ll perform three sets; admission is free. Listeners are encouraged to come decked in ’40s style.
