Last year, Chicago bassist/composer Kitt Lyles recorded an album called Real Talk, a collection of original material exploring his South Carolina roots combining folk melodies with jazz harmonies and improvisation. On it he tried to capture the longing for a different place felt by the musician who came to Chicago to study in Northwestern University’s jazz program and stayed in the city because of its vibrant jazz scene.
He’s put together what he calls his Real Talk Collective to perform the material, including trumpeter Justin Copeland, tenor sax player Roy McGrath, pianist Joaquin Garcia, guitarist Hans Luchs and drummer Gustavo Cortiñas. They’ll be playing at the Bop Stop. Admission is $12.
