The Chicago-based nonprofit group Alliance for the Great Lakes works tirelessly to help upgrade the health and cleanliness of the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth. Among its many programs is Adopt-a-Beach, which gives ordinary people the opportunity to get involved and join teams of people, removing plastics and other debris from their local beaches throughout the year.
They’ve dubbed September 17 their “Day of Action,” in celbration of International Coastal Cleanup, when volunteers along the coasts of all five Great Lakes in eight states will be working toward the goal of having removed half a million pounds of litter from shorelines (they’re at 490,000 now!)
Go here to find a cleanup near you. One is taking place at Mentor Headlands Dunes State Park where you can join local Meijer employees to pick up litter. Cleanup supplies will be provided; they recommend bringing sunscreen and a water bottle — which you will not drop on the beach! Meet by the trees near the concession stand. And yes, kids are welcome. They’re the environmentalists of the future!
