78th Street Studios Will Be Busy with Openings and Books on Third Friday

Fri 9/16 @ 5-9PM

This month’s Third Friday has several highlights you’ll definitely want to catch.

One of them is the opening of the retrospective at HEDGE Gallery of the work of the late John W. Carlson, beloved painter, educator and raconteur who was taken from the community very suddenly in December 2010. His previous show was HEDGE’s last before the pandemic but this show will give viewer a chance to see 30 years of his work, including new, never-before-seen pieces he was working on when he died. Downstairs and at the other end of the buolding, E11even 2 gallery presents Karictures, which it describes as “just as quirky as the its namesake” (which pretty much deacribes every show at this pop art-oriented space. Galleryco-owner/ artist Billy Nainiger is known for his mixed-media work and in this show he uses found materials, such as scrap wood, bolts and washers, most of which came from his garage and basement, while others came from friends who heard about the project, to create “mini personas.”

“Some are funny, some are serious, and some are actually a little scary,” he says.  “They all carry a wide range of personalities.”

In addition, local vintage book dealers will be on hand in honor of Cleveland Book Week. There’ll be live music throughout the four-story building, Local West will again be offering food and BARneo will be serving drinks on the ramp level as usual to benefit Cleveland art museum ARTneo across the way.

Third Friday is free and open to all including children and well-behaved pets. Find a list of participating galleries, artist studios and businesses at 78thstreetstudios.com.
