We’re all about it. Always have been. And probably always will. Making things defines our region.

Those of us who are musicians are familiar with EarthQuaker hand-built guitar effects pedals, made right here in Akron. They’re hosting their first music festival to showcase their handiwork. Which sounds great. Another Ohio creation, the Ohio Burlesque Festival turns six this weekend. And now in its seventh year, Weapons of Mass Creation gathers at PHS to talk design and creativity.

Nothing will replace the cancelled Cleveland Pride, but numerous groups and local leaders have quickly created an event on Saturday to celebrate. TCO and CMA alight in Hough. Beach Stav rocks the Happy Dog. The American Community Gardening Association holds their annual conference here in Cleveland. Vintage Ohio pours into Kirtland. Ukranians pack St. Pokrova’s. Asian immigrants speak out at the Maltz.

Mansfield Frazier has created the thriving Vineyards and BioCellar at Chateau Hough right in the middle of the thriving neighborhood of Hough, and now he hosts his first-ever fundraiser. In his columns this week, Mansfield warns us of danger. If we’re going to get through this together, we’re going to have to get creative. –Thomas Mulready

Not too many people are aware that the internationally popular sound processing pedals EarthQuaker Devices are made in Akron. Launched in 2004 as a one-man operation, it now employs dozens.

This weekend, the company will hold its first EarthQuaker Day event to raise its profile. There’ll be live music, food, a riff contest and, of course, the chance to try out and buy their pedals. Sat 7/6.

The Ohio Burlesque Fest has become a monster since it debuted five years ago. For its 6th year, it will feature more than 60 entertainers over three nights at the Beachland, including performers from Canada, the UK and Colombia.

You won’t see founder Bella Sin onstage this year because she’s nearly seven months pregnant but she’ll be running around keeping it all together. She found time to talk with John Benson to give us a little preview of what’s on tap. Thu 7/4-Sat 7/6.

Here’s how you make history relevant: tie into current events (the new show Power & Politics syncs with the Republican National Convention coming to Cleveland- again), get everyone involved with games and contests (scavenger hunt, campaign button making, drawings), and throw in a signature cocktail (how about a Coolidge Cooler?).

The result is History on Tap, and the next one takes place on Thu 8/11 at the Cleveland History Center featuring Andy Billman, the director of Believeland, the ESPN documentary on the history of Cleveland’s storied major league sports franchises. Comeback Cocktail, anyone? Tune in as CoolCleveland speaks with Sloane King-Owen about mixing history with fun for everyone.

In 2015, Cleveland’s Office of Sustainability partnered with Holden Arboretum and other groups to create a new Cleveland Tree Plan, recognizing the importance of trees in our community.

“The sobering fact is is that Cleveland’s tree canopy cover is an abysmal 19 percent and declining,” says Holden CEO Clem Hamilton. “Less than half the land that could be planted with trees is forested, and even there, the canopy cover is often sparse.”

“Most of our canopy is found in prosperous, well-treed neighborhoods that contrast with other neighborhoods with stark, jarring landscapes. Our desire for environmental justice, and how far we have to realize it, plays out conspicuously in our patterns of tree cover.”

Oberlin means it when they say FAMILY Fun Fair. The event in downtown Akron includes a classic car show, vendors and a classic rock band so parents don’t have to just watch their kids have fun. And everyone can try some bubble soccer, played while encased in a large inflatable sphere. Sat 8/6.

* As part of their ongoing 100th anniversary celebration, the Cleveland Cultural Gardens are holding a children’s fair where kids will visit four different gardens to learn about the cultures of Estonia, Finland, India and Lebanon. Sun 8/7

The Senate race in Ohio is critical as the Democrats are within four seats of overtaking Republican control of the US Senate. Current Ohio Senator Rob Portman, who has endorsed Donald Trump, is seen as one of the most vulnerable Senators up for reelection. A Democratic Senate would be essential to passing critical legislation and in confirming crucial nominees to the Supreme Court.
