Sat 8/26 @ 8PM
The centerpiece of the Cleveland Orchestra’s concert this weekend at Blossom Music Center is yet another piece familiar to non-classical audiences as well: Gustav Holst’s seven-part suite The Planets, written in 1914-1916 and first performed in its entirety in 1920. (There was no movement for Earth, and Pluto, which has had its ups and downs on the planetary list, was not discovered until 1930).
The piece will be accompanied by a performance of Antonin Dvořák’s Violin Concerto in A minor, which premiered in 1883. The soloist is young Italian violinist and Juilliard graduate Augustin Hadelich who, at age 33, has won the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis and the Warner Music Prize and last year, snagged a Grammy for Best Classical Instrumental Solo. The Women of the Blossom Festival Chorus join conductor Cristian Macelaru and the orchestra for The Planets.
Tickets are $24-$89.
