One great thing about traditional folk tunes is that they’re easy to learn, since they were created by amateur musicians and intended for community participation. Anyone who heard the late, great Pete Seeger remembers his cries of “Everybody sing!”
If you have a little experience and some basic familiarity with your instrument — mandolin, dulcimer, guitar, banjo, double bass, cellos, fiddle, viola — come and bring your instrument to join music leader Paul Kirk and other musicians for an informal old-time jam session at the Music Settlement’s Ohio City location. Tunes will be taught by ear for you to listen and pick up on. Kirk’s an old hand at this, having played bowed string instruments for four decades and composing more than 500 folk-style tunes of his own.
The jam sessions take place on the third Wednesday of every month. They’re free although donations are appreciated to support the mission of the nonprofit Music Settlement: making music accessible to people of all ages and skill levels. Registration is required due to limited space. Go here.
