The duo of cellist Hannah Collins and percussionist Michael Compitello, known collectively as New Morse Code, isn’t exactly a traditional classical duo, even beyond its unusual and deceptively limited lineup of instruments.
Making their recording debut with 2017’s Simplicity Itself, Collins and Compitello have created an unusual path over the last decade, making statements about pressing issues such as climate change, incorporating found objects and electronic processing, and utilizing field recordings, along other things. As their bio says, “This unrestricted approach has allowed them to create a body of work in which Hannah can be found crushing plastic bottles and Michael plucking the strings of the cello — all with the intention of expanding and facilitating the imaginations of their composer-collaborators — while ultimately creating a meaningful and lasting repertoire.”
New Morse Code will perform for the Rocky River Chamber Music Society at West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church. As always, the concerts are free, though donations are appreciated. The concert will also be live streamed.
