Fri 12/2 @ 6PM & 8PM
The flute isn’t the most prominent instrument in jazz, although a handful of well-known musicians, such as Herbie Mann and Hubert Laws, made it their main instrument. East Coast musician Jamie Baum has joined this elite group, studying both classical and jazz techniques at the New England Conservatory. She’s a 2014 Guggenheim Fellow and has released five albums, the most recent, 2013’s In This Life, inspired by the music of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
She also performs with several ensembles (when she’s not teaching). She’ll be bringing her quintet Short Stories, which she debuted in early 2015, to town when she performs at Blu Jazz Akron. It features short compositions inspired by jazz legends such as Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk. In addition to herself, it includes guitarist Nir Felder, keyboard player Andy Milne, bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Jeff Hirshfield.
Baum will be conducting a free master class at 6pm. Tickets for the concert at 8 are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.
