Akron’s Gum-Dip Theatre aims to challenge people’s notions of community identity, reaching out to diverse audiences through story circles and pay-what-you-can performances.

Its next show, Brokers Without Borders, features a diverse ensemble of former refugees who act as “cultural brokers,” bridging their culture of origin and their new one for family and community members. It revolves around the experiences of refugees from the Bhutanese, Karen and Congolese communities who are trying to navigate an unfamiliar world and help their families do the same. The work is devised by Neema Bal, Hsa Win, Samantha Byake and Katie Beck.

Following the performances, there’ll be what they’re calling a “short creative response process,” a structured dialogue engaging performers and audience members.

The play runs Friday-Sunday November 12-14 and November 19-21 with Friday and Saturday performances @ 7pm and Sunday performances @ 2pm. At the Balch Street Theater. Tickets are $15 or pay-what-you-can at the door. Go here to get tickets.
