BlueWater Orchestra Celebrates Celtic Landscape in Music

Fri 5/5 @ 7:30PM

Sat 5/6 @ 7:30PM

Cleveland’s BlueWater Chamber Orchestra is calling its next concert program “Celtic Charisma.” It features a group of pieces inspired by Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

It reaches back to 1842 for the program’s capper, French composer Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 in A minor (“Scottish”), inspired by a walking tour of Scotland the composer took in 1829. The inspiration rattled around in his head for more than a decade before it came to full fruition.

The other two pieces on the program come from lesser-known composers. British Gerald Finzi wrote his “A Severn Rhapsody” in 1923, memorializing Britain’s Severn River Valey region, while Irish composer Ina Boyce wrote her Elegy: Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra in 1913. Linda Atherton will be joining the orchestra on cello in the latter piece.

The ensemble will perform at Rocky River Presbyterian Church in Friday May 5 and at Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights on Saturday May 6. A freewill offering will be taken at the concert.
