The Cleveland Ballet officially opens its 7th season this week at Playhouse Square with a pair of performances of its new full-length ballet version of Don Quixote, showcasing the 28-member company.
The new version was choreographed by Cleveland Ballet’s co-founder/artistic director Gladisa Guadalupe, after original choreography by Marius Petipa to the score by Leon Minkus. The new version takes a different approach from most previous ones. Instead of seeing Quixote’s quest as being the product of his untethered imagintion, Guadalupe has crafted a version that maintains “we all have a little Don Quixote in us dreams that once seemed wild and unattainable, challenges that once seemed daunting or insurmountable. Ultimately, it is how we overcome these obstacles and work to attain our dreams that define the person we become.”
The Cleveland Ballet’s Don Quixote features a new set by Jeff McLaughlin, lighting by Dennis Dugan & costumes by Cleveland ballet design team. And violinist Alexandra Preucil will join the dancers onstage for the gypsy scene.
