It was the 2008 High School Rock Off that launched the young band The Modern Electric, and they’ve proved to been one of the most enduring acts to emerge from that annual contest with a solid local following. Over the years, they’ve honed the sound they call “cinematic rock,” making a big, dramatic sound with a mere four instruments.
It was eight years ago that the band released its holiday single Northcoast Christmas. That’s now available as part of a gatefold double vinyl, with the group’s self-titled 2009 debut, which features its best-known and best-loved tune “David Bowie (Save Us All).” It’s the first time it’s appeared on vinyl. Their upcoming show at the Beachland Ballroom will celebrate that release.
And while the chance to hear The Modern Electric is always a treat, this show is a powerhouse triple-header. Also on the bill are Youngstown’s Vindys and John’s Little Sister, two very different, but equally strong female-fronted bands. John’s Little Sister, fronted by singer/guitarist Jessica Sikon, has an eclectic folk/pop/rock sound that’s deceptively sweet but packs a subtle punch. And the Vindys’ singer Jackie Popovic has a controlled yet inhibited blues/soul wail that raises the roof a la Aretha and Tina. If you want to hear the crème de la creme of local music, catch this show.
Tickets are $12 in advance, $14 at the door.
