Sat 2/25 @ 10:30AM

Sat 2/25 @ 7:30PM

Wu Man is a master of the ancient Chinese plucked instrument called the pipa (sometimes referred to as the “Chinese lute”), widely used in traditional Chinese music and introduced into contemporary classical music by groups such as the Silk Road Project, founded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, with whom Wu Man performs.

She’ll be at Oberlin this week to share her knowledge in a lecture, a master class and a concert, all free and open to the public.

On Friday February 2 @ 4:30pm, she’ll speak in the Dye Lecture hall on the topic of “Unexpected Cross-Cultural,” sharing her thoughts on traditional Chinese music and the career she’s forged for herself joining east and west with an education that began in Beijing and continued at Harvard and the New England Conservatory of Music. She’ll also demonstrate the pipa and host a Q&A period following the lecture.

On Saturday February 25, she’ll do a master class with Oberlin students on adapting global musical styles to western instruments. The public is welcome to observe. Finally, that evening at 7:30, she’ll join with Oberlin’s quartet in residence the Verona Quartet to present a concert called “Goin’ Home: An exploration of nostalgia and searching for home” in the Warner Concert Hall. It features pieces by John Dowland, Antonín Dvořák, Luigi Boccherini, Sulkhan Tsintsadze, Zhao Jiping, and Wu Man. Although it’s free, reservations are required for the concert here.
