Maria Hassabi is a Cyprus-born, New York-based artist/choreographer who works across a variety of media and disciplines. In the past 20 years, she’s focused on the interaction of movement to still images and sculpture, “utilizing stillness and the velocity of deceleration as both technique and subject.”
Hassabi will be debuting her work CANCELLED, which “considers womanhood from perspectives that cross generations,” four times this week in the Ames Family Atrium of the Cleveland Museum of Art. In it four female performers work with a soundscape doing solos based on women’s everyday movements. “The use of verticality, and its resistance to gravity, is interspersed with more fluid movements that become central to the work,” we’re told. “CANCELLED is meticulously crafted, with every action and every look subject to counts and cues.”
The performances are all free.
