“There’s Christmas in July so why not Halloween in April?” asks Cleveand Institute of Art Cinematheque co-founder and director John Ewing, pointing out one of the sillier traditions seemingly designed as a promotions for bars. “Clevelanders shouldn’t have to wait six more months for one of their favorite holidays. So we’re flipping the calendar forward and screening four classic chillers and a new nightmare on Euclid Avenue this spring.”
The series runs April 1-30 and kicks off this weekend with one of the blockbuster horror films of all time, The Exorcistfrom 1973, which launched the career of 14-year-old Linda Blair (If you want to see real horror, search for photos of her with 80s hair!) In it, she’s possessed by a demon causing sores, projective vomiting and the famous head-spinning scene. CIA Cinematheque will show the extended directors’ cut of the film (more horror!) in its Peter B. Lewis Theater twice this weekend, Friday April 1 and Saturday April 2.
Upcoming films include Alfred Hitchcock’s 1972 Frenzy (April 8 & 9), Mad Love from 1935, directed by Karl Freund, the cinematographer who shot Metropolis (April 16), 1972 blaxploitation film Blacula (April 21 & 23), and 2021 indie horror film We’re All Going to the World’s Fair (April 29 & 30).
Admission ranges from $13 to $10. Masks and proof of vaccination are required.
