The 1997 book Tuesdays with Morrie by sportswriter Mitch Albom was a huge hit, to put it mildly. It depicted a series of conversations that Albom had with his former professor Morrie Schwartz who is dying of Lou Gehrig’s Disease. It’s full of easily palatable nuggets of wisdom about the “meaning of life,” the importance of love, appreciating other people and learning to be a good friend.
The stage version of the book is ideally suited for small local theaters with its two-person cast and “lessons in life” that appeal to a wide range of people.
The Magical Theatre Company, which calls itself “Northeast Ohio’s original professional resident and touring theatre for young audiences and families,” is mounting the stage version, which is enjoying a another surge of popularity with the release of a 25th anniversary edition of the book last year.
“There is much to love about Tuesdays with Morrie, but one of the most relevant features is that we all have a Mitch or Morrie in our lives,” says director Dennis O’Connell. “Maybe our spouse or sibling or friend — maybe even ourselves — pursue life similarly to Mitch. Thus, Morrie’s message resonates strongly. Conversely, many of us have had a Morrie in our lives — a beloved teacher or mentor and we’ve forgotten those tenets we were taught. We need to be reminded, gently and with humor. In this play we are, and in such an uplifting manner.”
Adam Hoffman of Cuyahoga Falls and Canton’s Michael Sonata comprise the two-man cast.
The show runs for one weekend only and is suitable for those ages 12 and up. Tickets are $18 & $20 each. Get them at magicaltheatre.org.
