The City Stages music series — formerly Ohio City Stages — has scoured the world for its roster of global music performers. And for its 2018 finale it’s come up with someone with an unusual blend of cultural roots.
Based in Tel Aviv, Israel, Gili Yalo’s roots are in Ethiopia, which had a black Jewish population. During a famine in the mid 80s, these Jews were evacuated from Sudan, where they had fled to refugee camps from their own country. Most now live in Israel. Yalo brought with him the songs he learned growing up and integrated those with new influences he encountered. He now tours with a five-piece band that blends jazz, soul and pop into his Ethiopian roots.
The concert will take place at a brand new location for events: the Nord Familiy Greenway on the west side of the Cleveland Museum of Art. It’s free and open to all. FRONT exhibitions at the museum will be open until midnight.
