Homecoming

Every week is homecoming week around here, whether you have family coming in for the 4th, or you’re celebrating with friends new and old.

David Bowie made NEO his home: his first US concert was here, and a powerful regional fan base propelled him to stardom. Our show this weekend at the BOP STOP covers his entire life & all his music, with a focus on his performances in NEO, including a rare photo exhibit by CoolCleveland editor Anastasia Pantsios. Don’t miss it.

Likewise, CoolCleveland columnist Alex Sukhoy found success in our town, and has now published her first business book, and I was honored to pen the foreword. Rallying to save our hometown Great Lake, citizens will be holding firm with All Hands On Deck. Rib, White and Blue returns to downtown Akron’s Lock 3 Live, and WRUW’s Studio-A-Rama moves to MOCA. CoolCleveland’s own Mansfield Frazier hosts a fundraiser at Goldhorn Brewery to support his candidacy for Ward 7 council, in his effort to make our hometown just a little better. –Thomas Mulready

It could be said that Bowie’s career wouldn’t have been the same without Cleveland. Our region caught on quickly, and never let go. We’re mounting David Bowie in Cleveland: 1972-1983-1990, a photo exhibit by Anastasia Pantsios featuring rare and unseen photos of Bowie’s performances throughout his career.

This rare photo of David Bowie and U2’s Bono is from his 1990 appearance at the Richfield Coliseum. The photo exhibit is free with the show, “An Evening With(out) David Bowie,” on Fri 6/30 & Sat 7/1 at the BOP STOP. If you caught Bowie live in Cleveland, send us a note (Info@CoolCleveland.com), and we may include your anecdote in the show.

The tiny Cleveland jazz club is the perfect venue to experience this show: the sight lines are brilliant, so you can see the rare video and photos from every phase of the artist’s career. The stellar acoustics let you hear the nuance of the unreleased music, the rare tracks, and the live music sets by Vanity Crash. There’s food and drink available all night long.

The only catch? The BOP STOP is so intimate, the show keeps selling out. Get your tickets early and join us for Part 1 at 7:30PM and Part 2 at 9:30PM (get a discount and stay for both), presented in full on Fri 6/30, then repeated on Sat 7/1. Hey, that’s far out so you heard him too!

When Michigander Kimberly Simon learned that Trump proposed to eliminate funding for the Great Lakes Restoration initiative, she knew she had to act. She came up with the All Hands on Deck hand-holding event.

Groups in cities around the Great Lakes, including Cleveland, got involved. You can stand with other clean water advocates at Whiskey Island’s Wendy Park to show that the health of the lakes matters. Mon 7/3.

Longtime CoolCleveland readers know Alex Sukhoy as the author of the “Career ToolBox” column, which offered tips for navigating the job market and finding their ideal fit. Now living in Chicago, Sukhoy, who has written several relationship books, has finally put her columns together for her first business book, Date Your Career: The Longest Relationship of Your Life. Alex talks to John Benson about how it all came together.

When the weather is right, which it was when we visited Holden Arboretum recently, you can easily spot Lake Erie from the top of the Emergent Tower, and it seems like you can see all the way to Canada!

CoolCleveland spent some time with Eva Rodriguez, Holden’s interpretive services coordinator, as she pointed out all the cool new labels and signage that help to explain not only the physiology of the trees and plants at Holden, but also the story behind them, how they interact and how they impact our day to day lives.

The Great Lakes Science Center is holding another of their special holiday demo/project events for the July 4th holiday. Kids and families can make red, white & blue glitter slime, learn how fireworks get those brilliant colors and watch a watermelon being blown up! Sun 7/2-Tue 7/4.
